How AI is Revolutionizing RPG World-Building for Game Masters
RPG world-building has always been about creating something out of nothing, a skill every gamemaster cherishes. But when the sheer scale of imagination meets the constraints of time and energy, technology steps in to help. With tools like ChatGPT Projects, NotebookLM, Midjourney Patchwork and platforms such as The Gamemaster Platform, we’re not just improving the process—we’re reimagining it.
When I first started creating RPG settings, the process felt overwhelming. Every map, every culture, every bit of lore came from endless scribbles and late nights spent trying to make it all fit together. Now, AI gives gamemasters the power to tackle these challenges without compromising creativity.
In a previous blog we spoke about the 4 GM processes that AI will transform completely changing how GMs approach the game.
In this blog we will go into more detail around the world building process.
Traditional World Building Processes
The art of world building in TTRPGs is a meticulous and time-consuming endeavor that demands a high level of creativity, consistency, and dedication. GMs are tasked with constructing elaborate backdrops—geographies that sprawl across continents, histories that span millennia, and cultures as diverse as our own world. This process is foundational, setting the stage upon which all narratives unfold and adventures take place. Yet, it is not without its challenges, as maintaining depth and plausibility can often become overwhelming.

and so much more...
My Approach to World-Building
RPG World-building is as personal as the stories it helps tell—there’s no single right or wrong way to approach it. For me, it’s a process that unfolds in three distinct phases, through a 9-step process, each phase building upon the last to create a cohesive and immersive setting.
Broad Understanding: I start with a high-level view of the world—a broad understanding of how it functions, its key themes, and its unique elements. This forms the backbone of the setting and is documented in a world overview document. This document serves as a foundational guide, detailing everything from geography and cultures to the role of magic or technology. It provides the structure within which everything else will grow. I use the deep dive framework when creating my broad understanding of my world.
Fleshing Out a Specific Region: With the world overview as my AI training guide, I narrow my focus to a specific region. This phase is where the details come to life—organizations are created, maps, NPCs, local traditions, and conflicts. Using AI tools like ChatGPT, I enrich this region with layers of complexity and depth, ensuring it feels authentic and connected to the broader world. I will often reference the 1000 questions when thinking about this region.
Campaign Creation: The final phase is campaign-focused. With the region fully fleshed out, I shift gears to think about the narrative. What stories will emerge from this part of the world? What challenges and opportunities will the players encounter? This is where the creativity of world-building directly feeds into the gameplay experience, turning static ideas into dynamic adventures.
Worldbuilding Resources
Let’s explore a structured nine-step approach to world-building and how AI tools can transform each step:
Building Blocks
1. Establish the Core Concept and Building Blocks
The foundation of any RPG world begins with a clear idea. Through a question-and-answer process with a GPT based on the deep dive framework, I like to create the building blocks for the world. Whether it’s a world where fading stars represent forgotten gods or a realm where technology and magic coexist, ChatGPT can help refine and expand your vision. It’s like brainstorming with an endlessly imaginative partner.
Terra Cognita
2. Biomes, Physical Geography and Environments
Geography shapes how civilizations develop. Understanding the key flora and fauna, natural resources and geology can help you think through your societies, cultures and build tensions around the resources and geological locations I use ChatGPT Projects to manage my maps and regions with features like mountain ranges, rivers, and deserts.
3. Cosmology, Magic and Religion
This category focuses on the metaphysical structure of the world, covering the creation myths, gods, magic, and the planes of existence. Cosmology affects how inhabitants view the universe, shaping their religious practices, beliefs, and even their day-to-day interactions with magic or divine powers. This aspect can heavily influence the cultural and philosophical outlook of different races and regions.
4. Technology, Economy, and Politics
This section addresses the advancement and resources of a civilization. It explores trade networks, technological advancements, and how economic hubs shape societies. The level of technology (whether medieval, steampunk, or advanced arcane technology) deeply impacts the world’s political and social structures, creating tension or collaboration based on wealth and resources.
The Origins and Tales of Old
5. History and Mythology
The History and Mythology section delves into the origins, legends, and pivotal events that have shaped the current state of the world. Understanding the mythological background, the rise and fall of empires, and the conflicts that have occurred helps establish the dynamics of the present day, influencing how societies function and how characters fit into the larger story.
6. Races and Cultures
Detail the different races, their origins, cultural practices, languages, and interactions with each other and the world. Make sure to keep in mind where they came from and where they live.
Organizations, Story Arcs & Players
7. Organizations
Organizations in RPG games are powerful tools for creating intrigue, driving conflict, and immersing players in a rich, interconnected world. They can serve as allies, adversaries, or neutral entities, giving players opportunities to form alliances, face challenges, or navigate moral dilemmas. Well-crafted organizations bring depth and tension to your game, ensuring that every decision has far-reaching consequences.
8. Current State of the World
Pulling it all together. This is about understanding the relationships between your different elements. Provide a snapshot of present-day politics, organizations, religions, resources, and key regions, outlining the major powers and ongoing conflicts. The purpose of this section is to start to think about tensions and conflicts within the region. With AI trained on your document, you can use it to begin to identify natural tensions and conflicts within your region and world.
9. Campaign Creation, Story Arcs and Acts
From the current state of the world tensions, I transition to outlining story first campaign ideas. I work on the overarching campaign themes, major and minor story arcs, and key NPCs that drive the narrative forward. Use campaign and story arcs across acts to plan your adventures. It is the job of the GM to set the scene and let the players determine the story. The story is written as you play the game.
AI Tools To Support Worldbuilding
ChatGPT Projects - I am really liking the projects folder to manage my thoughts and dreaming around the world and campaigns. They keep me organized and allow for me to interact and iterate on different ideas.
NotebookLM - Similar to ChatGPT Projects, this is a nice free platform where I can organize my content around topics, it will even generate a podcast on your content.
Midjourney Patchwork - This is interesting concept, and I am thinking about it from both worldbuilding and story boarding process. I am still exploring how best to use this.
The Game Master Platform - Once I homed in on my campaign and I want to build the campaign and run my first session, this is where I go. There isn't another platform out there that allows you to build, manage, run, share, and publish your campaigns to a marketplace. Check out my GM page and the marketplace of current campaigns.
